Processionary caterpillar ALERT!

As Head Gardener McGrady pointed out on the show this morning, be aware of these fascinating yet very toxic creatures, who are on the move at the moment.

They can be extremely harmful to children and pets, who are understandably curious about their appearance and processionary behaviour.

(Our currency partner) Spartan win Feefo Platinum Trusted Award for 2023

Spartan FX has won the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award, an independent seal of excellence, which recognises businesses that consistently deliver a world-class customer experience.

Feefo established the Trusted Service Awards in 2014 to recognise brands that use the platform to collect verified reviews and receive exceptional feedback from their customers. The awards are unique because they truly reflect a business's dedication to providing outstanding customer service by analysing feedback from real customers.

Gary Steadman, Director at Spartan FX, commented: "After winning the Feefo Gold award in 2021 and 2022, it’s an honour to be awarded the Platinum Service award for 2023 as it’s the first time we’ve been eligible for it. Spartan FX has been built on having customer service as one of its core values. Being awarded the platinum service award by Feefo means everything to us, as it’s given based on independent reviews left by real customers that experience the service we offer."

"I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all of the team here at Spartan FX for maintaining the excellent standards of service that this business was founded upon and to thank all of our customers [you GuMPers know who you are] that took the time to write genuine and honest reviews of the experience that they have had with us.”

Congratulating Spartan FX, Tony Wheble, CEO at Feefo, said: “This year has been a difficult one for so many businesses. I’m delighted to recognise thousands of our clients that have overcome various challenges to provide such high levels of customer service and satisfaction.“

"The Trusted Service Awards have always been about recognising companies that go way beyond the norm in customer service and in turn receive great feedback from delighted customers," said Tony.

“A particular congratulations to Spartan FX for winning a Platinum Trusted Service Award by providing great customer service consistently over a number of years. I look forward to seeing them continue to achieve next year and beyond.”

GUMPERS do it on the beach!

"We invite all GuMP'ers to do the same where they live. A year ago when we stayed in Salir do Porto, we walked to Sao Martinho each day. The first few days we dropped a lot of stuff in the bins at the car park at the boardwalk in SMdP," says Michael Whitby,  pictured here on his daily walk and beach clean-up.

"As days went by, there was visibly less trash and that’s just the two of us. We leave wood and soft paper, but essentially we’re after plastics including plastic fishing net, ropes etc."

"It’s the same here in Sesimbra and we’re not eco-freaks, but we are sailors, and after years of sailing the oceans we have seen some horror stories. Every bit helps!" he adds.

LAUNCH OF “WHEN TO CALL SNS 24 OR INEM” CAMPAIGN

As shared via Brits in Portugal - https://www.facebook.com/BritsInPortugal

When to call INEM on 112 (European Emergency Number) and when to seek advice from the SNS24 line. Helpful info here courtesy of our friends at Safe Communities Portugal.

The General Directorate of Health (DGS), Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS) and the National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM) launch today the Campaign “When to call SNS 24 or INEM?” to raise awareness of the correct use of the lines “808 24 24 24” and “112” by citizens. The inappropriate use of these lines can delay critical responses in time and occupy resources in the wrong way.

With the objective of providing an improvement in the quality of care and guaranteeing the access of users to the most competent body to provide the intended service at any given moment, the campaign compares non-emergent health problems and situations that may involve risk to life, thus clarifying when to use SNS 24 or INEM.

In case of mild or moderate pain, fever, change in blood pressure, itching, persistent cough, persistent crying of the child, diarrhoea or nausea, or other non-emergency situations, the user should contact SNS 24 through the number 808 24 24 24 to receive the appropriate advice. When it comes to an accident with injured people, a suspected stroke, chest pain, choking, difficulty breathing, altered state of consciousness, severe burns or burns in sensitive areas, heavy or uncontrollable bleeding for example, the user should call 112 – European Emergency Number.

In 2022, the SNS 24 Line answered more than nine million calls, the highest number ever. The Urgent Patients Guidance Centres (CODU) of INEM also received more than 1.5 million calls that year, the highest number since records began. Of these calls answered at the INEM CODU, more than 103,000 were transferred to the SNS 24, which represents an average of 280 calls per day that were considered non-urgent and an increase of 10% compared to 2021.

Food & Wine Club: Sonante Dão Tinto

This caught my eye at Intermarche just now, which I'm hoping will pair nicely with burgers tonight.

I think it's fair to say that the Dão DOC/DOP is a bit of a 'marmite' zone for Portuguese wine lovers, but I'm always keen to give any producers that I've not noticed before,  from any region, a try.

This red is interesting because it features not only national favourites Tinto Roriz and Touriga Nacional grapes, but also the Jaen berry too, which I wasn't aware of.

At 3.99 euros, it's got to be worth a try and I like the effort that's gone into the label and concept. I have the 2020 bottling, best vintages and other background information for this wine is set out at Vivino.

Sonante seems to mean 'sinful' in Portuguese, which confuses me, as I would have guessed it to be 'sonic' or 'resonant'  given the illustration of a complex, Heath-Robinson style instrument on the label!

Food: Great Noodle Find (sub)

I occasionally miss Chinese food, home-cooked like 'Maa' makes or from a more authentic , non-acclimatised restaurant .

Sometimes it's the absence of classic ingredients that is the challenge, so it was a delight to find Portugal's 'Meada' pasta that makes a really good thick noodle - discovered as a searched for the basis of a nice heart-warming, comforting soup in these recently very damp times.

This noodle/pasta is apparently Milanese in origin, and is - as our kids who also now love it, discovered - a tubular design that can take on board a lot of sauce or juice.

I picked up mine  at Intermarché for around a euro for a 500g bag, as I recall, easily enough for a family of 5 (two adults, three kids).

Pictured is my chicken and seafood noodle soup, which went down well with noodle-soaked broth topped with non-traditional yet local fresh herbs! True comfort food based on a little supermarket sleuthing, great Portuguese ingredients and a little adaptation.

If you fancy it, search online for Meada Massa...

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR UK NATIONALS

This from Tig James in the Expats in Portugal Facebook group yesterday...

Yesterday, I had a long discussion with the British Embassy who have asked me to inform UK nationals of the current situation in Portugal and for me to make several requests.

At the end of 2020, approximately 46,000 UK nationals were registered as legally resident in Portugal. By the end of the same year only around 36,000 had registered on the Brexit portal so as to receive the Withdrawal Agreement biometric card (WABC). In total, there are around 37,000 UK nationals now registered on the portal which would include those who arrived towards the end of 2020, prior to Brexit being implemented.

We are aware that a number of UK nationals have left Portugal and, indeed, quite a few did prior to Brexit taking place. However, 10,000 UK nationals not having registered on the Brexit portal is a large number of people and we believe far exceeds the amount that have actually left.

We are aware of five main reasons why people have not registered:

1. We are hearing that people believe if they have been resident in Portugal for a long time they do not need to register on the Brexit portal. I have heard this a few times and it is very much not the case.

ANYONE, if they were resident in Portugal prior to 2021, regardless of length of residency in Portugal (even if you have been a resident for 50 years), mustregister on the Brexit portal to obtain the QR code. The QR code then initiates the process whereby SEF send an email in order for you to book an appointment to obtain the WABC.

2. People believe, because they already have an 'in date' EU residency document or card they do not need to obtain a WABC. The original residency documentation people are in possession of, is for EU citizens only. We are no longer EU citizens, we are now called third country nationals and this form of identification very shortly will no longer be valid for UK nationals.

Many, many institutions in Portugal will not accept the EU residency documentation in UK nationals possession, nor will many Schengen Area border guards. It is essential people register on the Brexit portal and obtain their WABC.

3. The majority of the advertising, information given regarding the WABC's, has been on social media. There are many people who either are not comfortable/don't have the knowledge/ are unable to use social media or do not have access to the internet who will be unaware of the importance of being in possession of a WABC. 4. Some UK nationals do not think getting a WABC applies to them or they can't be bothered to do it. If a UK national arrived in Portugal prior to 2021, then it doesapply to them and they must register on the Brexit portal and get a WABC. As far as the latter group is concerned, those that can't be bothered, there is little I can say other than it matters very much that they do.

5. Some UK nationals are disabled and are unable to attend the locations they have been offered on the SEF website. If this is the case, if you are, obtain a doctor's letter stating the situation and email it to the email address below, explaining in the email the circumstances then, as per the FAQ's on the SEF website, you will be contacted and this issue will be addressed with you: Email address: Brexit@sef.pt

FAMILY REUNIFICATION:

Those waiting for the family reunification process to take place will be pleased to learn it is commencing this week. All members of a family who are waiting for their UK national relative to obtain their WABC, and those family members, regardless of nationality, ALREADY hold some form of residency documentation for Portugal (whether expired or not), the following action may now take place.

The UK national holding the WABC may now go to the SEF website and, on their SEF account, register their family members requiring family reunification.

Those family members that have never had residency documentation, in whatever form, representations are being made in the strongest terms that this process is started as soon as possible too.

APPOINTMENTS:

At the moment, there are approximately 500 SEF appointments for WABC's that have not been taken up. I have been informed that SEF appointments for this process are not infinite and in the not so distant future will cease.

If you have been offered an appointment it is getting increasingly more important that you take one up as soon as possible before they are withdrawn.

Additionally, it has been requested of SEF that appointments are made available for 2023. Appointments are released in batches and, again, need to be taken up prior to them being withdrawn. SEF's resources are stretched to the limit and the facility for UK nationals to obtain an appointment for a WABC is something that SEF are unable to sustain indefinitely.

FINALLY:

Could everyone please, please, please talk to their UK friends, relatives, acquaintances, work colleagues, Joe down the bar, every man and his dog about this situation. If necessary please print off this post and hand it to people together with my previous posts outlining how to apply for the QR code on the Brexit portal which can be done by placing my name in the search facility. For those UK nationals that struggle with social media, please help them.

This is a serious situation where thousands of UK nationals will not be legal in Portugal if they don't register on the Brexit portal.

If anyone has any further feedback as to why people have not registered please PM me. Thank you.

The new Money and Finance for Expats podcast will stream live every Monday morning from the 21st November at 10am featuring Paul Correa and Matt Penfold

New Expat Money & Finance Podcast Launches (with host Carl Munson!)

Anyone who has moved abroad to enjoy a better quality of life or experience a more fulfilling retirement is likely to have concerns about managing their money and planning their financial future.

“Words that come to mind are ‘complicated’, ‘confusing’ and downright ‘dull’,” suggests Paul Correa, the host of a new podcast aimed at expats, migrants and anyone attempting to manage and plan their financial future in a new country. Paul, along with colleague and podcast co-host Matt Penfold, leads Fiduciary Wealth Management who have ‘earned a reputation for combining high quality technical expertise with commercial pragmatism’, which they are now taking to the airwaves and YouTube.

“We are dedicated to positively shaping the wealth of the expatriate community through ethical tax led wealth management advice,” they say. “Our mission is to make a real positive difference to expats and our new podcast is an opportunity for the wealth management curious and seasoned investors alike to ask questions, get answers and keep a weekly finger on the global financial pulse.”

“In a time where more and more people are considering moving abroad, and against a backdrop of global political and economic uncertainty, who can they turn to for candid and sound money management insight?” asks Matt. “As the cost of living increases, interest rates rise, and get-rich-quick schemes seem to be crashing and burning in front of our eyes, what can be done to boost investment returns, minimise risk and make our portfolios and pensions effective and efficient?”

"Let’s face it, most expat money and wealth management podcasts are dry and dull", says Paul. "Our intention is to make people aware of their potential risks and opportunities, help them with practical advice and support AND have some fun in the process on-screen and through headphones on our weekly show".

“Personal finance and wealth management needn’t be boring or painful,” adds Matt. “Sure, safeguarding our personal wealth is a serious business, but it doesn’t have to be painful or a turn-off.”

The new Money and Finance for Expats podcast will stream live every Monday morning from the 21st November at 10am. All are welcome with questions, comments and to make contact privately with the team if so inspired. The podcast will be available on your favourite podcasting platform as well as FWM’s YouTube channel.

“The team at fiduciary wealth are extremely knowledgeable and the advice and guidance I have been given regarding relocating tax planning pensions and investment options has been without a doubt the most in-depth advice by far. These are uncertain times and knowing a reputable company like Fiduciary is looking after me fills me with reassurance. We are looking forward to our future retirement.“ said happy client Jemma recently.

"Not Quite Azulejos"

GuMPer and gifted designer Justus Hayes has launched some new lines that are influenced by  traditional Portuguese tile work known as Azulejos

Tribal Tendencies seen in São Martinho do Porto, Portugal

And not in a bad way!

Here's the band I saw last night and mentioned this morning on the show - Tribal Tendencies - playing in the video, right.

Thanks to Gastao, a local legend you will meet soon who invited me, and hosts Ana and Ricardo at Baia Cultural Bar who get a mention in the short Expats Portugal short video here.

I highly recommend these guys, who will be appearing at this wonderful venue again next week with a female vocalist.

Booking advisable, the food and music, strongly recommended!

Portugal, Place of Possibility. Your Invitation to The Portugal Club...

The Portugal Club will open its doors publicly for the first time this Thursday evening (27th October) at 9.30pm Portugal time to give YouTube and Facebook viewers a chance to consider their 'Portuguese Possibility'.

The Club, usually a closed group for Portugal-bound migrants - who can use the weekly online group setting to review plans, check assumptions and hang out with fellow travellers - is a feature of Good Morning Portugal's 'GuMPers who get together'  membership/support level.

On this occasion, the Club will go public and offer a taster of how it all works and can be of massive benefit to anyone making a new home in Portugal or even just visiting as a tourist.

The idea of a Portuguese Possibility will be presented and discussed.  Viewers will be invited to envision their future for a fulfilling life in Portugal, long after the first flushes of excitement and the honeymoon period have passed!

Celebrating the Work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, Torres Vedras

The Centre for Arts and Creativity (CAC) in Torres Vedras is hosting a temporary exhibition The “Political Mask” – Carnival in the work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1870-1905) until February 2023.

From the centre website: "Providing regular graphic commentary on Portuguese life for over 30 years, how did Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905) portray Carnaval, an important date in Lisbon's public entertainment?"

"The exhibition, curated by Álvaro Costa de Matos, seeks to answer the question by diving into the graphic work of the caricaturist, looking at Carnaval, not only as a moment of inversion of the established, but as a historical phenomenon that contemplates countless social, political, economic and religious," the site tells us.

Golf in (Northern) Portugal

We haven't covered much of the glorious golfing facilities in Portugal.

Grateful thanks to GuMPer John Heimbach here, where surprisingly our first golf coverage is in the north of Portugal - The Axis Golf Club in Ponte de  Lima to be exact - rather than in the Algarve that is world-famous in golf circles.

The two thoughtfully-made, beautiful videos are a brief overview (and pleasant wander) plus a longer, hole-by-hole commentary from John for the more serious golf fan.

Both showcase the beauty of Northern Portugal as well as the featured course.

'Hospital Experience Special' airs Tuesday 25th October

Our special guests on next Tuesday's #TroubleShootTuesday show are Marcus Laurence and Bill Mauro, who are enjoying a new life in the mountains of Central Portugal. That said, they recently experienced a medical emergency that tested the Portuguese health service and their trust in it.

Find out LIVE on Tuesday's show what happened, and how - thankfully - everything turned out OK, but not without a few hair-raising moments and challenges.

About Bill and Marcus

A married couple from the USA (PA), they retired early at 55 and 48, and moved to Portugal in October, 2019, where they lived in Lisbon for a couple of years. Post-pandemic, they wanted to move the countryside and chose the area around Coimbra, where they wanted to maintain access to services and conveniences.

"Previously, we had private insurance that we used in Lisbon and public healthcare is more accessible where we live now, " they say. "Marcus had used emergency services previously for an injury. Bill had used emergency services for kidney stones."

Their recent experience, however, was much more serious...

"Marcus had shortness of breath during exercise and had a bad cough earlier, but otherwise felt fine," Bill told us. "Saturday morning, we went to our local 'Centro de Saúde' to have the cough looked at."

"The doctor on duty was not our regular doctor and did not speak much English. He listened to my heart and told me I needed an EKG (ECG) that day. So he sent me to CHUC (Coimbra Hospital)," adds Marcus.

It's here that events took a serious turn, with Marcus admitted to the emergency room with a rapid heart rate and eventually admitted to the cardiac unit after his heart rate could not be slowed down.

Twelve days in the cardiac unit followed

Tune in on Tuesday to find out more, including Bill and Marcus's personal experience of cultural differences, the language barrier, hospital food, visiting rights and standard of facilities.

"Doctors here have a less consultative approach and medications were given without explanation," says Marcus, who joins us on the show with Bill to reveal all - Tuesday, 25th October at 9am.

Don't miss it!

New Exhibition: Art of Land & Forest

An exhibition of landscape paintings and wood sculptures by Jan Park & Carlos Carvalho has been opened by Castanheira de Pera President António Henriques -  "Art of the Earth and the Forest" at Casa do Tempo until November 27.

Jan Park is a British artist and divides her time between the studio/art gallery she has in the UK and the village house she restored in the Central region, after falling in love with Portugal and its friendly people for over 15 years.

"Landscape, nature and colour have a great influence on Jan’s art and alongside the strong architectural standard, Portugal offers her a beautiful and inspiring setting to paint. Time in Portugal is spent travelling and exploring new areas, while collecting information and pictures in sketchbooks," we are told

Instagram and Facebook @janparkart

Carlos Carvalho originates from Castanheira de Pera native and, after several years away from his homeland, is back to his roots with TOCCO Handicraft - a project that aims to reconcile the know-how he acquired throughout his professional career with the potential of local resources (specifically wood) and with a taste for art and crafts.

Supporting environmental sustainability, the objective of TOCCO Handicraft is to take advantage of tree parts or pieces of wood to produce exclusive decorative and utility products, such as bowls, bread boards, chairs and sculptures, as well as a prototype pedal car that Carlos has developed.

Known for a body of work that meddles with sustainability and pollution concerns surrounding nature and animals, Bordalo II creates massive, big-scale animal sculptures by using all kinds of urban waste, ranging from scraps of metal, dumpsters and plastic toys to hoses, ropes and all kinds of marine debris and road dividers," says The Portugal News
